If you have children under age 18, it’s not too late to claim the 2021 Child Tax Credit, even if you don’t usually file taxes. Be sure to file a 2021 tax return in 2022 to claim the credit, which is worth $3,600 per child under age 6 and $3,000 per child aged 6-17. Learn more here.

Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)

  • Eligible workers can qualify for a credit worth between $538-$6,660.
  • Even if you have no children, you may be eligible.
  • You can also receive the state Earned Income Credit when you file your Illinois state tax return. The Illinois credit is worth 18% of the Federal EITC.
  • Use this EITC Eligibility Checker and check this EITC webpage to learn more about who is eligible.
  • If you earned less money in 2020 than you did in 2019, you are allowed to use your 2019 earnings to calculate your 2020 EITC. Be sure to have your 2019 earnings total available when you file your 2020 return.
    • The same thing will be true when you file your taxes for 2021. Make sure you have your 2019 earnings total when you file your 2021 return as well.
  • If you were eligible for the EITC for 2018 and/or 2019, it’s not too late to file your taxes to claim those credits.
    • You have 3 years to claim a refund. Now that the filing deadline of May 17, 2021, has passed, you can no longer claim a refund from a 2017 return.
